Definition of Silicon metal
The main purpose of the silicon metal is the additive as a non-iron-base alloy. The content of silicon in the earth crust is 27.7%, the second largest element in earth curst, the most abundant element in the earth crust - oxygen and silicon - combine to silica SiO2, accounting for 87% of the total mass of the crust.
Silicon is a nonmetallic element, gray, metallic color, hard and brittle. Atomic weight 28.80; density is 2.33g/m3; melting point is 1410℃; boiling point is 2355℃; resistivity was 2140Ω.m.
The silicon metal is produced from quartz and coke in an electric furnace, and the content of silicon element is about 98% (in recent years, with the content of 99.99% Si is also named silicon metal), the other impurities are mainly iron, aluminum, calcium and so on. Semiconductor silicon, which use for production of semiconductor device, is a high purity silicon metal, with polycrystalline and monocrystal form.
Grade of silicon metal and its additional product:
Grade of Si metal: as per the content of Fe, Al and Ca in Si metal, they could be divide into various grade, such as 553, 441, 411, 421, 3303, 3305, 2202, 2502, 1501, 1101 etc.
Additional products: silicon powder, silicon slag, microsilica etc.
Purpose of silicon metal:
1. Use for Al alloy product: could be added in aluminum alloys, to enhance the strength of the alloy, increase its anti-oxidation and corrosion resistance, decrease its density and coefficient of thermal expansion, meliorate its casting performance, and make the alloy have a high impact resistance and pressure resistance.
2. Used for cold-rolled silicon steel product: After add silicon metal in steel, it could greatly improve the magnetic properties of steel, increase its permeability, reducing the hysteresis and eddy current losses.
3. Use for high purity semiconductor product: Due to the high melting point of silicon, good thermal stability, large band gap, rich in resources, with technology has been improving, integrated circuits and large-scale integrated circuits which made from silicon semiconductor have been used in various fields, the demand is growing up year by year.
4. Use for organic silicon product: silicone, silicon resin, silicone oil
Silicone: Maintain flexibility in the range of-700℃ to 2000℃, could be used for high temperature gaskets and cold insulation materials.
Silicon resin: For the production of insulating paint, heat temperature of 180 ~ 2000℃, can also be used for the production of high temperature coatings.
Silicone oil: For the production of senior lubricant, polishing agent, fluid spring, and the dielectric liquid, also could be processed into a colorless transparent liquid, sprayed on the building for waterproofing.
Silicon metal is more and more widely used in organic silicon industry, the usage amount is tend to exceed aluminum alloy industry.
5. Use for heat-resisting material product: For the production of Si3N4, heat-resistant, wear-resistant, and corrosion-resistant.
Making the coated material can prevent oxidation.
Siliconized steel surface can improve the corrosion resistance of the steel.
